SPRINGFIELD, MO – Springfield Demize and Drury University alums Ben Taylor and Peter Higgins will be looking to make the jump into the ranks of professional soccer this weekend.

Taylor and Higgins have been invited to represent the Demize at the 2011 United Soccer Leagues (USL) Men’s Player Combine scheduled for Jan. 20-23 in Charleston, S.C.

The duo will have an opportunity to play in front of scouts and coaches from both Major League Soccer and USL-Pro in training sessions and games over the course of the four day event with the hopes of signing a professional contract following the combine.

Through the previous four USL combines more than 125 players have signed professional contracts.

Both players have represented the Demize in both the USL’s Premier Development League (PDL) and in the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL). Higgins captained the Demize during the 2010 PDL campaign, playing in 10 games while providing consistency at his center midfield position.

Despite being injured for most of the 2010 season, Taylor made the most of his time on the field, scoring two goals in two games while playing primarily at left back.

Higgins and Taylor played their final season at Drury this past fall, and were major players in the most successful four-year run in the program’s history. Drury went 58-21-3 during the pair’s four seasons in uniform, won the squad’s first Great Lakes Valley Conference title, and qualified for it’s first ever NCAA-II National Tournament.

Both players earned multiple GLVC all-conference awards, NSCAA and Daktronics all-region awards, and Taylor was a Daktronics second team all-American in 2009.

The USL Men’s Player Combine can be followed on multiple platforms, with live updates from training sessions and the nine scrimmages available via twitter.com/USLPRO and daily recaps and stories on USLSoccer.com and Facebook.com/USLSoccer.
